Brand Clarity Before Website Chaos – Why Planning Matters

If you’ve ever sat down to build your website and thought, “Where do I even start?” you are not alone.

In fact, that feeling of chaos is something I hear from so many women in business, especially when they’re building their website themselves or trying to brief a designer without being totally clear on what they want.

It’s frustrating, overwhelming, and sometimes leads to a site that doesn’t feel quite right and doesn't feel authentic to you.

Planning is like doing the outside bits of a jigsaw - it helps it make sense!
Planning is like doing the outside bits of a jigsaw - it helps it make sense!

But here’s the good news...that chaos can be avoided with a little bit of planning before you even start the design process.

Start with clarity - not colours

It’s tempting to jump straight into design decisions:

  • “What colour palette should I use?”

  • “Do I want script or sans-serif fonts?”

  • “Should the buttons be round or square?”

But before any of that, ask yourself:

  • What is my brand really about?

  • Who am I trying to reach?

  • What do I want people to feel when they land on my site?

  • What action do I want them to take?

Brand clarity = design direction. Without it, your site can feel muddled, mismatched or just “off.”

Define your website’s purpose

Your website isn’t just a digital business card, it’s a tool. It should help you:

  • Book more calls

  • Sell your services or products

  • Educate or inform your audience

  • Build trust and credibility

Different goals need different structures and priorities. Planning helps you design with intention, not guesswork.

Know what you want to say (before you start writing)

Writing your content will be 100x easier if you’ve mapped out:

  • The main pages you need (Home, About, Services, Contact, etc.)

  • What you want each page to do

  • The core message for each section

A rough content outline—even bullet points—is a brilliant place to start.

The result? A smoother, faster, more confident build

Whether you’re DIYing or working with a designer, brand and content clarity makes everything easier. Fewer edits. Less second-guessing. More confidence.

And, most importantly, a website that actually works for your business.
