The Biggest Wix Website Mistakes I See and How to Fix Them

Wix is a fantastic platform for small business owners to feel more in control of their online presence. It’s flexible, intuitive, and powerful… when used well.

But after reviewing and redesigning dozens of Wix websites, I’ve seen some common mistakes that can quietly hold a site back from reaching its full potential.

The good news? Most of these are quick to fix once you know what to look for.

Mistake 1: The Cluttered Homepage

Trying to say everything on the homepage is tempting, but too much information can overwhelm visitors.

FIX IT: Give your homepage breathing space. Focus on your core message, who you help, and how they can take the next step. Less is more.

Mistake 2: Weak or missing calls to action

Many sites don’t clearly guide visitors toward taking action. If you don’t tell people what to do next, they’ll likely leave without doing anything.

FIX IT: Add buttons, links or prompts throughout your site:

  • “Book a free call”

  • “Explore my services”

  • “Get your free guide”

Make sure every page has a clear purpose and a next step.

Mistake 3: No mobile optimisation

Your site might look great on desktop but if it’s awkward to use on a phone, that’s a problem. Over half of your visitors are likely using mobile.

FIX IT: Use Wix’s mobile editor to tweak layout, font size, and button spacing. Test your site on your own phone and ask a friend to do the same.

Mistake 4: Generic text and placeholder content

Some Wix users leave in the demo content or use vague headings like “Welcome to my site.” It looks unfinished and doesn’t build trust.

FIX IT: Write copy in your voice, for your audience. Be warm, be clear, be you. And if you’re stuck, use my Home Page Prep Worksheet to get going.

Mistake 5: Hidden or hard-to-find contact details

If people have to hunt to get in touch with you, they’ll give up.

FIX IT: Add a clear “Contact” page and include your contact details in the footer of every page. If you use a booking form or scheduler, test it to make sure it works!

Bonus: SEO basics are missing

Wix has great SEO tools but many users don’t realise they need to fill in page titles, meta descriptions, and alt text.

FIX IT: Add a simple SEO checklist to your workflow when editing pages. Even small tweaks can make a big difference over time.
